I have decided to look at something that has always interested me. I'm going to write my report on Exhibition Design. I am fascinated with galleries and their exhibitions, whether it be art, design, fashion, history or science the way that they create an experience for the visitor that expresses the work is really interesting. I love how different types of information get given in so many new and dynamic ways as well as the more traditional approach. I would like to look at the over all experiences with the navigational systems and the publications as well as the promotion. I know that this topic is rather wide and I will need to think about a particular area to focus on.
I will at first look into all the areas to get a better understanding. I really want to educate myself with design companies that do exhibition design and look at their work and where and how they have gone about creating an experience. I will also visit current exhibitions and research past ones too. I'm looking forward to learning more about this area of design, for me the hardest part is coming up with a focus point. Thinking about who my report would be aimed at might be a good place for me to narrow down my idea.

Hi Emma - you should talk to Steve Lloyd of ico design who set the RSC project on the 2nd year of the FdA in term 2. Ico do lots of great pieces of exhibition design. I'm sure he'd be up for a short interview - ste.lloyd@me.com
ReplyDeleteAlso check out studiomyerscough too - they did the big stencil signage around LCC at the moment and do lots of great exhibition design - they did the Alan Aldridge at the design museum.
Also check of Graphc Thought Facility - http://www.graphicthoughtfacility.com/
Look at Casson Mann www.cassonmann.co.uk - they are award-winning and have worked on lots of major museum and exhibition design.
ReplyDeleteNick Bell Design has collaborated with them in the past - they do a lot of this kind of work also.
You might want to familiarise yourself with some basic museum studies literature to get an understanding of the theories behind why people engage in particular ways. Try Graham Black - The Engaging Museum. Do a search on what's in the library. It's sometimes referred to museology.
