Where am I?

At the moment I quite like the idea of looking into the concept of 'design is everything'.
Otherwise my other preferred area would be 'observation'. There are a few areas I would like to look into the subject 'observation' but i'm not really sure what route to go down at the moment!
I might look into how the observation of people and the way they react to certain things in life could be interlinked with a piece of design or advertising, or how it aids designers create a piece of design. Another idea was looking into how observation could be documented e.g. time and memory. Both of these ideas would involve looking into sociology and pscychology, and how they could be interlinked into design or help designers make their pieces stronger as different people have different reactions towards certain design pieces depending on colour, texture, lighting, past memories they have, and many other factors.

Hope everyones getting on ok so far!

  1. Hi Julia - you should look into the design company IDEO - they do a lot of this. Some terms/methods you should look into are visual ethnography and anthropology. I did a workshop during the 2nd year Consume project called Visual Anthropology where we looked at methods for observing people to learn and gather data to inform design choices. There are methods such as Perceptual Shift (where you film something happening and watch it back slowed down or sped up) De-centering (where you observe something that isn't the most obvious thing to observe - you shift the camera to film people's hands when they're talking rather than their faces for example) and Disruption (where you purposefully create a disruption to something you want to observe so you can see how people divert from their normal practice and develop new ways of overcoming it). These are common social science research methods. There are lots more research methods that you could borrow from the social sciences and use for design purposes. Exciting stuff.
