what direction am I heading in??

Well I think my report will be on how Sans and Sans Serif typefaces have changed over the many centuries since they were discovered or first used to how we use or misuse them now within graphic design. I am really interested in type and why there is such a big deal with using sans or serif typefaces especially when you use then together.

I really want to start looking at the different sans and serif typefaces and how they could work as a hybrid that could be one of my processes, then maybe surveys/polls etc to which typefaces is favour the most and why. At the moment I am still choosing just how specific I what my report to be so I have a lot more thinking and researching to do between now and Wednesday.

  1. Hi Natasha,

I think this is a big area that you are looking at - at the moment.

One suggestion could be to start doing a survey as to what designers intuitively prefer - sans serif or serif. You could investigate whether designers personal preferences effect their judgement in choosing the best typeface for the job.

I know I prefer sans serif and always try and use these - you could ask what fonts they like and why - try to get to the bottom of design 'snobbery' etc.

Maybe you could ask non-designers what they feel about the fonts that are on most computers? What would they think they would be best used for. Nearly everyone today has access to typographic tools/software on their PCs that are so powerful and advanced compared to what designers had even 10 years ago - they don't have the training though and that could explain why so much bad design exists.
