So far...

I have decided to look at photography in different formats, like digital, film, Polaroid, projection and so on to investigate on how the different formats have different effect and how it might give out different messages. Therefore how the formats represents the one moment that was captured. Also I will look at some photographers or example of different format of photography used to research on the decided topic. I might have to narrow the topic down and focus on fewer formats to investigate fully for the actual report.

  1. This is a big topic, but one of definite interest to designers who use photography in their work. Is that who you are aiming at?

Your question seems to be forming around why a photographer chooses particular formats for particular tasks/to make particular meaning. It might help you to look a general text on the meaning & interpretation of photography. Susan Sontag/Victor Burgin/Roland Barthes are all quite difficult to decipher but are key texts if you are looking at photography. Go and get a first year reading list for the photography BA here from a librarian and use it as a starting point for your reading...

You are in a good place to study photography - there is a whole school of it just down the corridor... When you have focussed on a topic it might be worth tapping into some of the expert knowledge in the Media School Photography courses. Interview a tutor - they should be able to focus you further? Or interview photography students if you want stats on what kind of formats are most used and for what?
