I’ve been researching a little into the ‘green’ phenomenon. There are loads of things out there at the moment, it’s a bit overwhelming, so it’s just a question of narrowing it down. Ethics is a big topic so I don’t know how much I’m going to focus on that, but today I had a little look at companies such as Thomas Matthews, Lovely As A Tree, Three Trees, Zerofee etc. And various blogs such as Design Less Better, Superuse, and GreenUpgrader for a wider variety of external links.
As my main interest is in reusing or repurposing objects to create something new, I think I need to research a little further into designers or companies that specialise in this. These two links below were the kind of thing I’m interested in:
http://www.reestore.com/index.htm
http://www.superuse.org
But I need to crack on and find more of an academic standpoint on the subject. Other publications and articles etc…I need to hit the library for some eco/sustainable product design books maybe? I picked up a couple already but they’re more about designing responsibly, rather than reusing objects.
I need to pick up ‘Experimental EcoDesign’ by Cara Brower and ‘The Eco-Design Handbook’ by Alastair Fuad-Luke.
Somewhere like the V&A or the Design Museum may be a good place to visit and find some unusual creations.
Maybe it would be better to link it with graphic design rather product design? But I’m not sure where to begin with that, it’s a little harder to research so I might need a little help…

Check out this classic book by Victor Papanek - Design for the Real World - there should be loads of copies in the library - its shelf number is 745.2 PAP
ReplyDeleteYou can get it on Amazon too: http://tinyurl.com/lld226
It's kinda where green stuff started - also check out Buckminster Fuller - he started talking about green design in the 1920s.
