"Don't just do good design, do good"

I have found quite a few books and articles which relate to things that i am interested in found some stuff by David B Berman - he seems one of the key people in the social and ethical design and has written a book "Do Good Design" which unfortunately they don't have it in the library. He says "Don't just do good design, do good" and "And the future of civilization is our common design project." which could be a very interesting angles to follow. Maybe i should look into altruistic design.

So far i have got out three books from the library.
Cradle to Cradle
Citizen Brands
Conscientious Object: Designing for an Ethical Message

Other ones that could be interesting to get would be
Outside Innovation: How your customers will co design your companies future
Corporate Socail Responsibility: Doing the most good for your company and your cause.

And I found six articles on the internet during our researching today relating the subject, i need to read through the properly and make notes. I really feel like i need to explore atm, and just collect information and interesting points and facts. So I don't feel i can specialise it down to one particular area of social design. I think i definately want to look at it from a very modern point of view, how and why it is developing in the way it is, what the future could be like.

Just read Darren's comment on my previous post and he seems to like the idea of women within graphic design, which is something which I think could be interest because no one else is doing anything on gender inequalities, I only found one book (just the one!) in the library today about women and design, which shocked me, and the book was very old. I thought there would be loads of feminists would would have written about women designers. I have always had the issue cross my mind over the last two years, and recently saw this article, http://www.designobserver.com/archives/entry.html?id=20303
which was got me really thinking about the whole issue. Think I might explore some more on this tonight, I wasn't sure weather to do this issue as I not really into feminism or anything, but i do notice that I lot of the graphic designers I see have been men, which was something i started to notice in the first year. Before Christmas I attending a lecture on "the Role of women Within Graphic Design" which was a research project being done by two female students. Could explore the roles women tend to go for in graphic design and why and what roles men tend to go for, is there a trend? Noticed on the Johnson Bank blog that they said that women tend to go for ethical branding more than men, might try and find that post.
.

Feel like i need to go home and just find stuff and read about it. I have written a lot, again! I'm not too good at summarizing!

  2. Another thought... I think you would benefit from looking at a bit of Guardian newspaper coverage about women in work and 'glass ceilings', just to familiarise yourself with the general key issues about barriers to success (having a family being the main one) and differing pay (i.e. much less) that women have to deal with. It is not just in design unfortunately, and although legislation has changed in recent years it is not changing fast enough.
