An article on how new technologies are giving advertisers more ways to profile and gather information on their customers, and target ads to customers... I don't think the full thing is available for free, but it was pretty interesting and was in last months WIRED (or maybe it's still in the shops) so maybe the library has it...

There are other technologies in the full article, like ones that profile sky users based on how they use their remotes so that their viewing habits can be recorded... allowing sky to target certain ads to certain users. There's more than that in the article, worth a read/
Hey I am looking at space and exhibitions but also retail I have found some books that have loads about wayfinding and why things are put in a certain place to get people to buy as well as colour, shapes, lights...
They might be some use.
Title : Retail Desire - Design, Display and Visual Merchandis, Johnny Tucker
In 1969, a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced him to do an interview. 38 years later, Levitan, director Josh Raskin and illustrator James Braithwaite have collaborated to create an animated short film using the original interview recording as the soundtrack. A spellbinding vessel for Lennon's boundless wit and timeless message, I Met the Walrus was nominated for the 2008 Academy Award for Animated Short.

I think that making a report directed to consumers is a good idea. Specially if you are studying to go into advertising. I guess it would show your critical thinking toward consumerism.
Going down the After Effects route can be very appropriate. Perhaps you can make use of the mixture of real footage and animation to 'reveal' what is subliminal.
